Rental registration and inspection
Kansas City, Kansas has licensed every residential rental since 1996 under Chapter 19, Article VIII of the Unified Government code; one license covers each building, and every license expires April 30.
For investors: Licenses do not transfer, so a buyer files a fresh application with the Neighborhood Resource Center on State Avenue at the change of ownership, before renting. An owner living outside Wyandotte County must also name a contact person who lives in the county.
The yearly KCK rental license costs $32 per building plus $23 per unit and is due May 1; a renewal still unpaid on August 1 takes a 10% penalty, then another 10% each month.
For investors: The city's own examples put a single-family rental at $55 and a fourplex at $124 a year. No license issues while the parcel's taxes are overdue, unless the owner is current on a Treasurer payment plan, so clear any delinquency at closing.
